Drive to combat theft of number plates

A CAMPAIGN to prevent number plate thefts has been launched in Selby.

Thieves take registration plates to beat speed cameras, avoid parking fines, congestion charges or paying for fuel, and North Yorkshire Police want to raise awareness of the issue.

Police are also distributing anti-theft packs from local police stations, which include discount vouchers for anti-theft locks at Halfords.

PCSO Glen Cooper, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Some people may think that having their number plate stolen is no big deal, but in reality it could end up hitting you in the pocket. I urge people to take the prospect of number plate theft seriously, follow our advice, be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”

So how many number plates have been stolen in the Selby area in say the last 3 months? No figures in the article which quotes a PCSO as spokesman. Is he running Selby Police Station then?

The most effective method of securing your number plate to your vehicle to make its theft harder is a product called no more nails (very strong thick glue used by joiners). We tested this method of adhesion recently and it survived a determined fifteen stone youth called Kevin trying to remove his safety boots from a scaffold plank for fifteen minutes under strict site conditions.

Selby police's "kits" on the other hand can be easily circumvented using a cordless tool most often supplied by an American company called Dewalt which I'm pretty sure most thieves have access to.

And can safely ignored as garbage.

I don't know why anyone goes to the bother of stealing plates, just look on ebay, you can buy a set with any reg you want for less than £10.

Which can be traced back to you as they are posted to your address, the seller is also supposed to do an online check with the DVLA if you do not supply documentation to prove ownership of the vehicle. Hence bad people still steal them.

If you can peel mine off without snapping them you'll be lucky to start with, and I have a spare set of plates. Most of these muppets don't even stick them on a similar make and model, and put them over their own. Petrol stations should make you swipe a credit or debit card upfront,or put a cash deposit down now it costs over a £100 to fill a tank.
