Drive to combat theft of number plates
8:06am Thursday 11th October 2012 in News
A CAMPAIGN to prevent number plate thefts has been launched in Selby.
Thieves take registration plates to beat speed cameras, avoid parking fines, congestion charges or paying for fuel, and North Yorkshire Police want to raise awareness of the issue.
Police are also distributing anti-theft packs from local police stations, which include discount vouchers for anti-theft locks at Halfords.
PCSO Glen Cooper, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Some people may think that having their number plate stolen is no big deal, but in reality it could end up hitting you in the pocket. I urge people to take the prospect of number plate theft seriously, follow our advice, be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”

Selby police's "kits" on the other hand can be easily circumvented using a cordless tool most often supplied by an American company called Dewalt which I'm pretty sure most thieves have access to.

I don't know why anyone goes to the bother of stealing plates, just look on ebay, you can buy a set with any reg you want for less than £10.
