A64 bridge repairs safety warning to motorists
9:49am Wednesday 10th October 2012 in News
MOTORISTS in York are being warned about work on a bridge over the A64 later this month.
The Highways Agency will be replacing a joint and parapet posts on the Bishopthorpe South bridge over the route between October 22 and December 7.
Drivers should allow more time for their journeys as a 50mph speed limit will be in force on both directions on a stretch of the A64 during this time.
The limit will be reduced to 30mph across the bridge due to a specialist system being used to keep the crossing open. Narrow traffic lanes and speed cameras will also be in place.
There will be full closures of the westbound carriageway at Fulford Interchange overnight, with diversions between 8pm and 6am through the centre of York along the A19 and A1036, and occasional lane closures on the eastbound side. The outer ring road will be signposted as an alternative route.
Highways Agency project manager Steve Wright said: “This essential work will improve driving conditions and reduce the need for future unplanned closures for maintenance, and will also reduce noise levels for nearby residents.
“Safety is our top priority, and for the safety of road users and road workers, we encourage all drivers to drive carefully past the works and along the diversion routes, keeping within the speed limit and concentrating on the road ahead.”
