Historic war memorial at York Cemetery gets new walkway
7:58am Wednesday 10th October 2012 in News
THE area around an historic war memorial in York has been spruced up thanks to a donation from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The Cross of Sacrifice at York Cemetery now has a new walkway, in time for next month’s Armistice Day ceremony, thanks to the £700 gift from the commission.
John Waterston, warden at the cemetery, said: “We have 250 Commonwealth war graves in the cemetery and we co-operate with the War Graves Commission to look after them.
“We also look after The Cross of Sacrifice in terms of maintenance. In a joint project we provided the labour to establish the new walkway. We had Tarmac in the area but it was starting to look very scruffy. It looks an awful lot better.”
