TRAFFIC lights stopped working and hundreds of properties were left in darkness, after a power cut in York.
A total of 413 residential and business properties in the north of the city, including Coney Street, Little Stonegate, and Stonegate, were affected by the cut.
A spokeswoman from City of York Council office in the area, said the fault had been reported to Northern Powergrid, who had sent an engineer to resolve the problem.
She said: "We're in the dark at the moment, but we've still got phone calls coming in to tell us the traffic lights are out. Apparently, over 500 properties went throughout York."
A spokeswoman from Northern Powergrid said: "At approximately 4.55pm we seem to have lost 413 customers in the York area.
"We are investigating at the moment but we don't know what has actually happened yet."
One worker at Kennedy's bar in Little Stonegate said the power was off for about 45 minutes, but did not affect them too badly.
She said: "The power just came back on at about 5.45pm, after about 45 minutes.
"Everything was off. Luckily, we only had a few people sat outside, so we just let them know and served what we could. We always have candles on anyway, so it was dim by the bar, but by the windows it was fine."

I note how the power failed during the evening rush hour when most traffic is on Museum Street and St Lenoards Place... can we have some figures as to how long it took to get from the train station to Clarence Street on the day of the power failure as compared to when everything is powered up? Because then we would know for sure whether traffic lights are to blame for aggrivating our world-famous congestion or not.
