SHOPPERS in York were left both shaken and stirred when “James Bond” made a surprise appearance on the city’s streets to promote a fireworks display.

The Daniel Craig lookalike – real name Steve Wright – took a stroll through the city centre on the 50th anniversary of the first 007 film release to launch the musical theme of Kaboom’s Guy Fawkes night event, which will be held on Sunday, November 4, at Rawcliffe Country Park.

The fireworks will be choreographed to classic Bond themes including Adele’s new song to mark the release of Skyfall, the latest movie in the franchise.

Those attending are being invited to come dressed as their favourite James Bond character and prizes will be handed out for the best outfits, with Steve being among the judges.

Mark Brayshaw, managing director of York-based Rockin’ Horse Promotions, the organisers of the event, said: “As Kaboom coincides with the release of the latest Bond film and takes place in the 50th anniversary year of the series, it seemed fitting that our show embraced Bond as the theme.

“John Barry, who wrote the music for 12 of the theme tunes, was born in York, as was Dame Judi Dench who stars as M, so the city has strong connections with 007.

“All the songs are perfect as a soundtrack to the drama and spectacle of a fireworks, lighting and special effects display.

“We may not be going as far as arranging for Bond to drop from a helicopter to make his entrance, but it is going to be an awesome night of entertainment.”

The show will also include a re-enactment of the Gunpowder Plot and live entertainment, as well as a funfair and traditional Bonfire Night food and drink.

The event runs from 4pm to 10pm and ticket prices start at £7.50 for adults and £5 for children.

Discounts are available for residents in the YO30 postcode area and combined entry and city travel tickets also on offer. They must be booked in advance at kaboomyork.com or at the Visit York information centre on Museum Street.
