Resurfacing work schemes to start

RESURFACING work will be carried out on several roads in and around York next week.

The schemes, which will see skid-resistant micro-asphalt surfaces being laid, start on Monday at Main Street in Elvington, Netherwindings and part of West Nooks in Haxby, Melcombe Avenue, Chipstead Walk and Portisham Place in Strensall, Longwood Road and Rivelin Way at Clifton Moor, and The Village and Sandy Lane in Stockton-on-the-Forest.

The work by City of York Council is expected to take two weeks and will be carried out between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, although the Elvington work – which will mean a temporary closure of Main Street next Wednesday – will be restricted to between 9.15am and 4pm.

I wonder if they'll do the usual and skimp on materials and not bother putting proper kerbs in, we'll have the usual pot holes everywhere within a year. Typical false economy.

The last time they resurfaced Elvington the road wasn't even repaired first - it was a complete mess!

Who's got the contract - surely not the same firm who did the job Cllr Warters can't find out about? If Richard Branson had a Virgin Roads business we'd be driving on smooth carriageways all the time! While we're at it Virgin Utilities would probably take less time with roadworks. I'd vote for Richard Branson to be President of a free England!

Why are these works always carried out during the day, when it affects people the most?! In America, road works are done overnight as to minimise disruption. If they can do it, why can't we??

Yet another source of traffic problems for the people of York. Together with the absolutely pathetic ring-road, I might as well walk the 30 mile round trip to work. Might get there quicker, too!

Most people would rather have noise during the day, than at night (when they are trying to get a good nights sleep), its also more expensive to pay contractors at night - how much more are you willing to pay in taxes??

I wonder if the road TO elvington is ever going to get resurfaced beyond Common Lane, as it is cracking up quite notably along there.... and by resurfaced I mean the proper old school style of doing a road whereby the old broken layer is removed entirely before applying a fresh smoopth surface - not the poxy "let's scatter some loose gravel over it and just hope it might bond together" loose chipping we have nowadays, the poor mans road surface that just masks all the faults in the surface until the winter time when they all open back up again.
