THE team behind a project which will light up York are looking for ideas to help them create their own wonderland.

The Illuminating York festival will see ten acres of the city’s Museum Gardens transformed through lighting, projections and technology, with the creative talents of comedian Vic Reeves being enlisted.

It runs from October 31 to November 3, and organisers are now holding a competition for residents to design their own wonderland creature – computerised, hand-drawn or in the form of a collage or painting. The only rules are that it has to be on an A4 piece of paper, with just one creature on each piece.

There are three age ranges: four to ten years, 11 to 16 years, and 16 and above.

Vic Reeves said: “I like to have something created at the end of every day – it might be small, it might be big, it might be anything, but it’s about seeing things from other angles and using your imagination to its fullest.”

Entries should be sent to Illuminating York, York Museums Trust, St Mary’s Lodge, Marygate, York, YO30 7JR or e-mailed to illuminatingyork@york.gov.uk by Sunday, October 21.

What about the alleged greenhouse gas emissions arising from such a waste of energy? Why aren't green activists marching as I write?

I think it's great to get people involved, just because you don't appreciate creativity doesn't make it a waste of time.
