Whale dies after being washed up on East Yorkshire beach
9:35am Monday 1st October 2012 in News
A WHALE which was washed up on an East Yorkshire beach has died.
Lifeboat crews in Bridlington were called to the beach near Auburn Farm at midday yesterday after the mammal became stranded, with members of the Northern Divers Marine Rescue Unit and volunteers attempting to refloat it.
However, despite an eight-hour rescue attempt, the whale - which is believed to have been injured by sea defences - died. Second coxswain Stuart Tibbet said: “The volunteers did everything they could to move the whale into deeper water and some of them were understandably upset at the outcome.
“Unfortunately, in the area where the whale came ashore, there are a number of World War II concrete and metal sea defences and the whale suffered some serious injuries.”
