Heart surgery move under fire

THE flooding of North Yorkshire’s roads is a major reason children’s heart surgery services should not be moved from our region, say campaigners.

The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF), which is battling to reverse an NHS decision to move paediatric heart services from Leeds to Newcastle, said the flooding of the A1, A19 and A63 raised questions over how seriously-ill children in our area would get to the north east.

CHSF director Sharon Cheng said: “Being stuck on a motorway for hours with a poorly child is unacceptable as well as the stress and strains it puts on the families of those children.”

i agree the heart unit should stay here in yorkshire the health minister and others made up their minds to close it before telling the public.then had a meeting and review at what cost that money could be spent on keeping the service here in yorkshire.its not just floods that can cause travel problems what about snow, high winds(stopping helicopter ambulance)driving in the dark and mainly time.something that kids don't have.think west yorkshire is next to englands biggest county and south yorkshire so all three counties have a massive area there must be hundreds of thousands of children in this area keep the service where the people are.

Erm The A1 goes both ways. How would kids get from Newcastle to leeds....and the A19 was closed in York and used as a diversion from the A1

It all goes to show that the outcomes for children is of less importance than travel convenience!

The campaigners are not suggesting Newcastle should be shut, but that because travelling distance/problems both should be retained
