It may have been nice weather for ducks earlier this week, but it was bad for thousands of plastic ones intended to take part in a duck race at Tadcaster tomorrow.

The race on the River Wharfe, planned to raise thousands of pounds for the town's swimming pool, has been cancelled following the floods.

Instead, the ducks will all be given numbers so they can enter a raffle during a fundraising event to be held between 12 noon and 4pm at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School. Olympic swimmer Chris Cook will pick the winning duck.

SEVEN kittens and three adult cats have this afternoon been rescued by the RSPCA from a property marooned by flooding south of York.
Chief Inspector Mark Gent offered to assist after hearing that the animals’ owner could not get back to their home near Stillingfleet because of flooding.
A spokeswoman said the inspector travelled by boat along a badly flooded stretch of road to the house, where he safely recovered five two-week old kittens, two nine-week old kittens and three older cats, and also four chickens. The animals have now gone to a vets for a check-up.

Highways bosses hope the A19 at Fulford can re-open tomorrow morning as floodwaters gradually recede.

The road's closure has been causing huge delays for rush hour motorists who are having to find alternative routes in and out of York, with drivers taking up to 90 minutes to travel two miles from Fishergate to Grimston Bar roundabout last night.

Meanwhile City of York Council says that residents affected by flooding who need emergency assistance over the weekend can call the authority between 10am and 4pm each day on 07768 937400.

Firefighters have helped a man who has been in a narrow boat in Thorganby for five days to safety. A crew used a boat to reach the man whose boat is moored near Ferry Lane this morning. He was unharmed and is now on dry land.

Meanwhile, firefighters are currently at City Mills sheltered accomodation in Skeldergate helping to get medication to residents stranded in the building.

Despite the fact their own York premises have been hit by floods, kind hearted off-duty firefighters have found the time to volunteer at an outdoor coffee morning in Tower Street for Macmillan Cancer Care.

DIVERS who entered the River Wharfe at Tadcaster this morning in the hope of inspecting the town bridge’s foundations have had to give up because the water is still flowing too fast.

The specialist contractors will try again on another day when river levels have fallen further, said North Yorkshire County Council. The bridge has been shut since Wednesday following concerns that floodwaters may have caused structural damage.

The closure of the A19 at Fulford because of flooding is causing huge delays for rush hour motorists who are having to find alternative routes in and out of York.  It took drivers up to 90 minutes to travel two miles from Fishergate via Heslington to Grimston Bar roundabout, the junction of the A64 and A1079 yesterday evening. Huge queues also developed on the eastbound A64 this morning, stretching from the York Outer Ring Road junction to Grimston Bar.

A FREE shuttle bus service has been provided between the two sides of Tadcaster until the town’s bridge can re-open.
The community has been divided since the bridge over the River Wharfe was closed on Wednesday amid fears that floodwaters may have caused structural damage.
North Yorkshire County Council says it will provide the bus service until river levels have fallen enough for experts to carry out a thorough structural inspection.

FLOOD levels on the River Ouse in York have fallen this morning to 4.71 metres above normal summer levels, the Environment Agency says. Levels, which peaked at just over 5 metres above normal summer levels, are continuing to fall slowly but will still remain high throughout the day.

The current flooding is causing significant delays to all bus routes in the city.  Below is a summary by routes showing the current diversions that are in place:

Route 1 – Not directly affected.

Route 2 Rawcliffe Bar Park & Ride – Not directly affected.

Route 3 Askham Bar Park & Ride – Buses are terminating at York Station and not serving Rougier Street or Tower Street.

Route 4 – Clifford Street not being served with buses stopping in Piccadilly in both directions.

Route X4 – Not directly affected.

Route 5 – Not directly affected.

Route 6 – Not directly affected.

Route 7 Designer Outlet Park & Ride – Service is split: Some buses are travelling directly between the site and the city centre via A1036 Tadcaster Road (intermediate stops not served).  Some buses are travelling via A19 Fulford Road, Broadway, Heslington Lane, returning to the city centre via A19 Fulford Road.

Route 8 Grimston Bar Park & Ride – Not directly affected.

Route 9 Monks Cross Park & Ride – Not directly affected.

Route 10 – Buses are not serving Main Street, Nether Poppleton and Long Ridge Lane.  All are travelling out via Millfield Lane, Ebor Way and Long Ridge Lane, returning via Millfield Lane.

Route 11 – Buses returning to original route following earlier diversion.

Route 12 – Not directly affected.

Route 13 – Not directly affected.

Route 16 – Not directly affected.

Route 19 – Not directly affected.

Route 20 – Main Street Nether Poppleton is not being served with all buses running via Ebor Way.

Route 21 – Buses are not serving Acaster Malbis village but are still serving Mount Pleasant caravan park.  Buses are unable to serve Knavesmire Road, South Bank and Bishopthorpe Road.

Route 24, 26 – Buses are not able to serve Fordlands Road and Crossfield Crescent but are still running on A19 Main Street as far as its junction with Fordlands Road.

Route 29, 29A – Not directly affected.

Route 30 – Not directly affected.

Route 31, 31X – Not directly affected.

Route 35 – Buses are not serving A19 Fulford Road.  All buses are running via A1079 Hull Road.
