A NEW handmade soap shop has opened in the old Vivienne Westwood store in Blake Street, York.

The Yorkshire Soap Company has opened what it believes to be the biggest soap shop in the world, covering more than 2,000 sq ft and selling 6,000 products, and has invited Guinness World Record officials to visit and find out.

Co-founder Warren Booth, originally from Copmanthorpe , started making soaps to sell while managing the Louis Vuitton concession at Harrods in London. Six years ago, he and former chef Marcus Doyle started making and selling the soaps from a small gift shop in Hebden Bridge with just £500.

Now the pair make the soaps at one of two shops in Hebden Bridge, and plan to open at least one more store this year, in Ilkley or Harrogate.

Mr Doyle said they had fallen in love with the unit in York, which employs six people. He said: “With a name like The Yorkshire Soap Company, we always had to be in York.”
