A RARE peep behind the scenes at the Mansion House kitchens has been served up as part of the York Food & Drink Festival.

Food historian Dr Annie Grey took on the role of a Victorian cook in the Lord Mayor of York’s historic home as she prepared a banquet.

Wearing 19th-century costume, she demonstrated the arts of cookery while also dishing up facts about life below stairs in the kitchens.

Elsewhere, York city centre was packed and bustling throughout the weekend as thousands of shoppers and visitors – enjoying the September sunshine before today’s heavy rain arrived – sampled and bought food from stalls lined up along streets such as Parliament Street.
