149 new homes plan for Thorpe Willoughby

DEVELOPERS have unveiled plans for 149 new homes in a village near Selby .

The proposals for the housing estate, earmarked for land off Leeds Road, in Thorpe Willoughby, have been handed in to Selby District Council. The firm behind the scheme says it would give the area an economic boost.

The project, drawn up by Linden Homes North, would include 30 two-bedroom, 57 three-bedroom and 62 four-bedroom properties, most of which would be two storeys high, as well as access routes to the new estate. A decision on the proposals is expected to be made in December.

A planning application for the 4.96-hectare site close to Thorpe Willoughby Primary School said the loss of the farmland where the homes would be built would not be “detrimental to the area” and its open nature meant there would no “overlooking” or loss of privacy for other residents in the village.

“Businesses in the area will gain the benefit of extra customers and potential employees when the properties are occupied,” said the report.

“Our development could only have a positive impact on business and investment in the area. Businesses will have the benefit of extra custom, with the future occupants of the proposed dwellings providing continuing workforces in the local area.

“Our proposal will be an attractive and socially viable addition.”

The architects said local councillors and Thorpe Willoughby Parish Council had been consulted about the planning application for the site and leaflets had been issued to homes in the village and the surrounding area. They also said some of the new homes, if approved, will be made available as affordable housing.

The planning application states that the plan would “provide the opportunity to bring this site into beneficial use, providing a high-quality residential development which will complement the character of the area and contribute to meeting an established need for housing in the district.”

As a York resident I am glad that the houses are being built in Selby and not in York.

I think James Alexander should resign over this.
