Youth representatives meet transport bosses

MEMBERS of the UK Youth Parliament and youth councils in North Yorkshire were today meeting transport chiefs and bus firms in York.

Representatives from bus operators and council transport officials have been invited to speak to the group about how more young people can be encouraged to use bus services in the region at a meeting which will also be addressed by York Central MP Hugh Bayley .

The UK Youth Parliament voted last year to campaign to improve transport services for young people, and Coun Dave Merrett , City of York Council ’s cabinet member for transport, planning and sustainability, said the authority had staged initial discussions about a special Young Person’s bus ticket, which could be used on all services in the city, but there were “some big financial challenges to overcome”.

“We’re very interested in hearing suggestions on addressing this and other ideas about what we can do collaboratively to attract more young people to use local bus services,” he said.
