York soldier scoops top training award

A SOLDIER from York has won a top Army award after finishing his recruit training.

Private Tom Milton, 20, of Acomb , completed the Combat Infantryman’s Course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, and was awarded the Best Recruit prize for his efforts.

Pte Milton’s platoon commander, Captain Andy Carr, said: “He is a really fit and capable individual, always on hand to help others who might be struggling. I can see that he already has leadership potential, I would expect him to become a good NCO.”

Pte Milton said: “I hadn’t always wanted to be a soldier, but plumbing definitely wasn’t for me. I have grown up with the Army being in Afghanistan, so it was something in the back of my mind.

After two weeks’ leave, Pte Milton will join his new unit, the 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own), in Germany.
