YORK’S twin city Dijon has been enlisted to help Yorkshire’s bid to host the Tour de France in 2014.

A delegation of York business, university and council representatives visited Dijon to build on the relationship between the twinned cities and identify commercial opportunities for York.

But council leader James Alexander also hand-delivered a letter requesting ‘Back le Bid’ support from Dijon politicians, saying: “York would be a fantastic city to host the Tour de France and its benefits to the city would be huge.”

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “It is great to have secured the backing of the Dijon region for our bid to bring Le Tour to Yorkshire.

“The region has hosted the race many times and crowned many of the great champions and we hope to follow in Dijon’s footsteps by adding Yorkshire to the Tour’s history of Grand Departs.”

I have not the slightest interest in cycle racing. But I certainly Back Le Bid!

Road closures, traffic jams, all inconvenience to residents trying to get to work, or shop so Comrade Alexander can once again 'claim' to bring money into York. All it does is make money for a select few and cost the rest of us in time and money. Unless he's proposing to reduce council tax in 2015 by whatever profit the council makes, then I say non!

You are kidding aren't you? The amount of exposure York will get would be phenomenal. The advertising priceless. All this brings in tourists with money to spend in our city therefore creating employment. All it will cause us is some minor traffic disruption. It's a no brainier, surely.

The olympic flame... wide coverage on local TV, some coverage on national TV but almost nothing within Europe or the world. Benefits to York and district? Marginal.

Grand Depart... huge coverage across the UK and Europe. Worldwide coverage dwarfs any other event that York could possibly hold. Benefits to York and district? Potentially enormous.

The route should include some of the following:- York, Sutton Bank, The Dales, Castle Howard, Wolds, Whitby coastline... and so on. I appreciate that cycle racing is a smallish sport still but please do not under estimate how much international exposure this would attract.

Absolutely. You only have to look at the big advertisers who are on during TdF coverage. This is a huge world event - it is why it is not just our Council who want it.
