YORK’S twin city Dijon has been enlisted to help Yorkshire’s bid to host the Tour de France in 2014.
A delegation of York business, university and council representatives visited Dijon to build on the relationship between the twinned cities and identify commercial opportunities for York.
But council leader James Alexander also hand-delivered a letter requesting ‘Back le Bid’ support from Dijon politicians, saying: “York would be a fantastic city to host the Tour de France and its benefits to the city would be huge.”
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “It is great to have secured the backing of the Dijon region for our bid to bring Le Tour to Yorkshire.
“The region has hosted the race many times and crowned many of the great champions and we hope to follow in Dijon’s footsteps by adding Yorkshire to the Tour’s history of Grand Departs.”
