A YORK woman who worked as a French polisher, laundry worker and a buttonmaker has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Violet Elsegood was born in York and lived in the city with her sisters, Ruth and Lily, and her brothers, Henry and Billy.

She was married in 1939 to husband George and they had one son, Geoff. George was wounded in the Second World War and Violet nursed him back to health, but he later died.

Violet attributes her long life to hard work, good fun and clean living. She enjoys spending time with her son and reminiscing about her experiences.
