Memorials to Sir Jimmy Savile unveiled in Scarborough

TWO permanent memorials to broadcaster and DJ Sir Jimmy Savile have been unveiled in the North Yorkshire town where he is buried.
Sir Jimmy, who died last October, had a home in Scarborough from the 1970s up to his death, and a black granite headstone has been placed on his grave at the town’s Woodlands Cemetery.
A gold plaque has also been unveiled at Wessex Court, on The Esplanade, where he had a flat. He was buried in Scarborough last November and had asked to be laid to rest at a 45-degree angle facing the sea.
Roger Foster, Sir Jimmy’s nephew, said: “The headstone is rather large, but then he was a rather large character in his life.
“Jimmy was very much a public figure and his funeral showed how much interest there was in his passing. To commemorate him and keep that memory going is superb. It recognises the fact he loved the town so much.”
The stone is inscribed with verses written by Sir Jimmy’s long-time friend Julie Ferguson, and also includes the quote “It was good while it lasted”.
