Beer-lovers out in force at York Beer and Cider Festival

Judging the ales at the festival Judging the ales at the festival

HUNDREDS of people descended on Knavesmire yesterday to taste the best breweries can offer at the biggest-ever York Beer and Cider Festival.

The York CAMRA-organised four-day festival – which will run until Sunday – is featuring 320 beers and 100 ciders.

Despite a wet and grey day, beer-lovers still turned out in droves to sample the goods yesterday. Wines, lagers, beer-related merchandise and food is also on offer.

One of the beers available is Rudgate Brewery’s Scoop, a special beer brewed to mark 130 years since The Press’s first edition.

Actually there has been beer tasting and judging for over 35 years at beer festivals.

Wine snobs used to look down on beer but not any more. Such is the breadth and depth of different beers available due to the renaissance of breweries - beers can be talked about and described in morr descriptive terms.

You can still sup it if you want but don't be an inverse snob and criticise those who want to discuss it in more detail...
