FREEMEN from historic cities across England and Wales will gather in York this weekend for an annual celebration.

Members will parade through the city’s streets with the procession forming part of an annual conference held by the Freemen of England & Wales Association, which was formed in 1966 by the late Harry Ward, a York florist and past master of the Gild of Freeman.

Freemen from places including Durham, Shrewsbury, Warwickshire, Liverpool, Morecambe, Rugby, Lincoln, Pembroke, Bristol, Leicester and Newcastle will flock to the meeting.

The freemen will enjoy a grand banquet in the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in Fossgate on Saturday evening, before a church service and robed procession though the city’s streets on Sunday morning.
