A VISIT from HMS York’s Lynx Helicopter thrilled staff and pupils when it landed on the playing field of a York school.

The aircraft and its crew dropped in to Applefields School in Bad Bargain Lane yesterday, where children where invited into the cockpit before some of the crew were given a guided tour of the school.

Head teacher George Gilmore was handed a cheque for more than £700, raised by the crew of the ship. He said: “It was a fantastic day, but it was tinged with sadness because of the decommissioning of HMS York. We have had a close affiliation with the ship since we opened in 2004. The crew, throughout that time, have given tremendous support to the school.” The ship’s company paraded through the city centre for the last time on Saturday ahead of her decommissioning at Portsmouth later this year.
