Hungate scheme’s backers ask for more time

DEVELOPERS could be given a boost in their bid to kick-start work on a stalled housing project in the centre of York.
The firm behind plans to build 720 homes on the massive Hungate site has asked City of York Council for more time to complete the development. It also said it could no longer meet affordable housing demands and other financial contributions it was originally supposed to provide.
Hungate (York) Regeneration Ltd’s application for an extension to its original planning permission for the site has been recommended for approval at a meeting of the authority’s planning committee on Thursday. If councillors back the request, the next phase would start by 2015 with the rest of the work being done in five stages, due for completion in 2024.
The original Hungate plans also included a landmark office building, shops and bars, a community hub, a new bridge over the River Foss and a riverside piazza. The first 162 homes were completed in 2009 but work has since ground to a halt A report to the meeting said planners felt it was “reasonable” to allow more time because of Government planning guidance and the site’s “scale and complexity”.
The original planning agreement meant detailed plans for the entire site had to be submitted by this August.
