York College says it has been left "absolutely devastated" by the death of a three-year-old girl at an outdoor play area at its site.
The accident happened yesterday afternoon in an outdoor play area at the Sim Balk Lane college, with the girl - who has not been named - believed to have become entangled in a piece of equipment while using a slide at about 2.35pm.
She was taken to York Hospital but died from her injuries. York College Day Nursery remained closed today while the police investigation into the tragedy continues.
A spokeswoman for York College said this morning: "York College is absolutely devastated at the news of the very sad death of a child, following a tragic incident at the York College Nursery yesterday.
"Our thoughts are with the child's family and the children, families at staff at the York College Nursery.
"Currently, York College staff are helping the emergency services with their enquiries and the nursery is closed today. Parents have been informed and will be kept updated with any further developments."
