Viewers urged to recycle old television sets

VIEWERS across North Yorkshire are being urged to use the region’s digital TV switchover to increase recycling rates.

The Tyne Tees region, whose coverage is received in some areas of North Yorkshire, is the last in England to change from an analogue to a digital signal, with the first part of the switch taking place last week and the second phase scheduled for September 26. North Yorkshire County Council is encouraging residents who have to buy new TVs for the changes to recycle their old sets at one of the authority’s 20 household waste recycling centres.

Up to 98 per cent of the materials salvaged from old televisions can be recycled. Coun Chris Metcalfe, executive member for waste management, said: “The digital switchover does not need to create more waste.

“If people take their TVs to one of our recycling centres, the council will make sure they are all recycled safely.”

I cant see many people even needing new televisions just because of the digital switchover. New aerials maybe, but 99% of old televisions, with a scart socket, will work with a set top box. Also, no wonder the council want old televisons, so they can flof them for scrap. It would be better using a freecycle site to give the stuff to people who need it, and they will collect it so you dont even have to go to the tip.

I put things like that outside the house, and they magically disappear! No need for me to hump stuff to recycling center, or have the hassle of it sitting around waiting for someone to notice an ad on freecycle.

Since the digi retune in July and including this one I cannot get Yorkshire on my digibox no matter how I try when previously I could, so therefore my TV is scrap as no good getting only Tyne Tees news.

I thought most people had the flat screen TV sets by now and they were capable of getting Freeview.
Anyway why is the council encourageing people to get rid of good working TV sets even though they not have a digital tuner Tesco etc. sell add on boxes at £20 or less.
Think this Reporter does not understand technical things.
