A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl has died this afternoon in a tragic accident at York College Day Nursery.
North Yorkshire Police said it appeared that the child had become entangled in a piece of play equipment while using a slide.
A force spokeswoman said officers were called by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service at around 2.35pm after a girl aged three suffered serious injuries in the play area at the college in Sim Balk Lane. “The girl was taken to York Hospital , where sadly she was pronounced dead,” she said. “The scene is currently cordoned off as officers investigate the incident. At this stage, police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances.”
She said police were carrying out an investigation into the incident to establish exactly what happened and would like anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them on 101.
“Ofsted and the Health and Safety Executive have been informed,” she said, adding that the nursery would be closed tomorrow.
Police officers stood guard outside the nursery last night.
A City of York Council spokesman said last night that the authority could confirm the tragic death of a three-year-old child. “All relevant agencies are aware and will be working together over the next few days,” he said. “This evening, our thoughts are with the family of the child and staff at the nursery.”
