UPDATED: Pedestrian dies in A64 crash

POLICE are looking for information about the identity of a man killed on the A64 north of York.

The man, who is believed to be in his sixties, died following a collision with a Seat Ibiza at about 5am this morning.

The incident occurred near the junction of Scotchman Lane at Claxton and the A64, and the road was closed for about five hours.

Senior investigating officer Traffic Constable Mark Gonella said North Yorkshire Police were not in a position to formally name the dead man, but believed he may have been from the Goole area. He also urged anyone who had seen the man, who was believed to have been walking in the centre of the road when he was struck by the car, in the area prior to his death to contact the police.

He said: “Prior to the collision, we have a heavy goods vehicle which was coming from York towards Malton , and the driver saw what he believed to be a pedestrian walking in the middle of the carriageway.

“We do believe that the pedestrian has been seen by other people in the Scotchman Lane area prior to the collision, so we are looking for anyone who may have seen a gentleman in his sixties in a white top walking in the area.

The road was closed in both directions between Malton and York from Scotchman Lane at Claxton to the A1237 Hopgrove roundabout, with hundreds of motorists forced to take diversions until just after 10am.

TC Gonella said the driver of the small car, a man in his 40s from the Malton area, was taken to hospital to be treated for shock, and has since been allowed home.
