Chance to walk 1066 battle site

THE 946th anniversary of the Battle of Fulford will be marked this Sunday with a walk around the scene of the fighting.

Archaeologist Chas Jones is leading the walk, which starts at 11am on the playing field opposite Fulford Cemetery (YO19 4QG for those with satnavs).

He said the walk was open to all and was free, adding: “The paths are good and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. The tour round the battlefield takes about two hours but stout shoes are recommended.”

The Press reported in May how Mr Jones had hit back after developers claimed there was no evidence the Battle of Fulford took place on the proposed site of York’s biggest housing scheme, the 700-home Germany Beck development.

He said several strands of evidence pointed to Germany Beck being the site of the 1066 battle, including hundreds of iron items found at sites along the length of the beck, which may have been “workshops” for recycling pieces of metal left over from the fight.
