Monday market to return ‘home’
8:39am Wednesday 12th September 2012 in News
YORK’S Monday Market will return to its traditional home next week.
Maintenance work and a summer clean-up has meant the market had been switched from its usual location in Newgate to Parliament Street for the last 20 weeks, but the scheme is now almost complete.
The market will be back in Newgate from next Monday and Coun Sonja Crisp , City of York Council ’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “York’s markets are a fantastic way for people to start their own business, and we hope more people will now consider Newgate Market as a place to work and visit.”
Darren Lovatt, the council’s senior market officer, said: “The scheme has been a real success all round with the traders capitalising on working in Parliament Street, and this programme has resulted in a refreshed working environment and an enhanced shopping experience for our customers.”

The traditional location of the market is in Parliament Street!

Seriously, I was sceptical about the market moving to Parliament St. during the refurbishment. I thought it would clutter the main street and would create too much mess.
However, I'm pleased to say, I was completely wrong! Really enjoyed walking through the market and coming across some excellent stalls. It brought an energy that is often missing from the centre of York on Mondays. Real shame the Council is moving it back.
