CYCLING enthusiasts headed to Rowntree Park for a weekend celebrating pedal power.

The latest Festival Of Cycling saw hundreds of visitors take advantage of fine summer weather to take in the various stalls, expert cycling advice and displays from cycling and BMX stunt riders.

Coun Dave Merrett , said: “The widened Festival Of Cycling is a fun way to learn more about sustainable travel, with lots of fun activities for everyone to get involved in.

“We hope people will go away feeling inspired to try out different modes of transport to help make York a cleaner, more sustainable city.”

The event is now part of iTravel York, an initiative funded from central governments’ Local Sustainable Transport Fund to “encourage non-congesting modes of travel, to improve air quality and to help boost the local economy.”

At least it was great weather this year. Last time round the staff for the park must have had a right job repairing the grass afterwards due to the rain and numbers attending. They keep that place looking nice and tidy and deserve our thanks.

One negative point though. The security personnel they used were dressed in black trousers and shirts and gave a very oppressive image to me upon arriving. It would be nice if consideration could be given to a dress code for security which would leave attendees more relaxed.

Ah, in the absence of an edit function I'd like to clarify security's shirts were white, not black. That image would most definitely be oppressive.

A really good weekend show - my family went both days and thought it great. The security was good - made us feel safe - and lets face it in York that is not always the case. We saw the security having to sort our some unsavoury youths making trouble.
And yes, PP, did spot you and did a quick turn around so I did not have to acknowledge you. Hope you got some ideas for brightening up the CTC show 'cos it certainly needs something!
Another successful CYC Event - we certainly have had some good ones this year and more to come!

Very enjoyable event. I queued to have a go on the weird bikes, managed half a lap on a small penny-farthing, did a dozen laps on a thing with treadles that was designed (I think) for training cross-country skiers, and a bit on a semi-recumbent like the EZ Bike, and was very grateful to ride home on my more orthodox steed! It is VERY difficult - perhaps impossible, except for unusual scenarios such as cargo carrying - to improve on the orthodox designs.

We are not allowed to comment on the report dated 2.21 pm Mon about a 15 year old cyclist killed in a collision with a car last Thursday at about 8.50 pm. But I have noticed the nights are drawing in, and at that time I would certainly be using lights on my bike. Was this child?

I was waiting at Rowan Avenue bus stop in New Earswick at around 9.15 pm on sunday when a copper pulled a young lad up on an unlit bike, he had a word with the lad then let him go on his way still unlit and on the pavement

My family and I went on the Sunday, good day out and were glad to see the police in attendance marking bikes, foc.
The only moan I would have is the idiot on his bike that went past me on his cycle on the cycle path, without a joke at approx, 25 mph and collided with another cyclist coming from the opposite direction. Not to mention some of the other idiots.
Just goes to show no matter what form of transport you use, they will always be a minority that you cannot educate.
Dark now by 8 pm , same story every year , lights on bikes , you know the ones that at least give you a sporting chance of seeing.
