ALL journalists love a good scoop – now we’ve got another great one for the people of York to enjoy.

The Press has teamed up with award-winning local brewery Rudgate to produce a special beer celebrating our 130th birthday.

On October 2, it will be 130 years since the inaugural edition of the Evening Press was launched – and we are inviting readers to raise a glass as we celebrate.

The beer has been brewed by Rudgate at its new brewery in Tockwith. Managing director Craig Lee said: “It’s great to be helping The Press celebrate its 130th anniversary. The beer is a 4.2 per cent, traditional style, chestnut-coloured beer. It is a classic Rudgate recipe.”

Scoop will be on sale at the York Beer and Cider Festival on Knavesmire, from September 19 to 22. The House Of The Trembling Madness in Stonegate will also be stocking it, and a number of other pubs are also being contacted and encouraged to take a cask.

The Evening Press was launched in 1882 by newspaper tycoon William Hargrove, who had also owned The York Herald. He sought to take advantage of the excellent new rail links across the north, and said the Evening Press would be “a daily newspaper for Yorkshire, Durham, and the adjoining counties”.

Steve Hughes, managing editor of The Press, said: “We’ve changed a lot over the past 130 years, but the combination of a pint and a paper is still hard to beat.

“We’re told the beer is full of character and very moreish – just like The Press, we like to think.”

Doubtless Gavin A will sample it in due course, and give us his verdict.

I find a pint and a cigarette go together much better - Wait, I'm still allowed to say that, right?
