Elvington residents prepare for annual scarecrow festival

A CHEEKY Prince Harry will be among some of the sights to be seen in Elvington as the village near York holds its annual scarecrow festival today.
The finishing touches were yesterday added to the creations and judging in the fundraising event was expected to start at 11am today.
Jean Ripley, co-organiser and chairwoman of the village hall committee, said: “It’s our tenth annual scarecrow festival, which we do in aid of the village hall.
“We were flooded very badly in 2000 and 2001 and we are still looking for funds.
“We get very good support from the village and there are normally about 30 scarecrows.”
Meanwhile, villagers in Huntington will be out in force this weekend to show off a catalogue of characters in their scarecrow trail.
The fifth annual event will run between 11am until 5pm today and tomorrow and there will be maps available for the trail.
Local residents are hosting a number of stalls including a tombola, face-painting and nail painting. Refreshments will be available from St Andrew’s Church, which is throwing open its doors on both days.
