THE number of stray dogs picked up by local authorities in the Yorkshire area has doubled in the last four years, a survey released today reveals.
The increase is four times the national figure for the same period. Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, says the total number of stray dogs in the Yorkshire TV region, which includes Yorkshire and parts of Lincolnshire and Humberside, has risen from 4,119 in 2008 to 8,606 in 2012, an increase of 109 per cent.
Nationally, the number of stray dogs picked up by local authorities has risen from 96,892 in 2008 to 118,932 in 2012, an increase of 23 per cent.
