Piece of rail heritage restored at National Railway Museum

A VINTAGE sign has been restored at one of York’s biggest tourist attractions.

The notice has been on the wall of the National Railway Museum’s former goods depot in Leeman Road since the late 1940s, and has always indicated a 15mph speed limit.

But in recent years the condition of the sign had deteriorated due to the weather, so the museum’s conservation team decided to fix it up.

The paint was hand mixed to match the original colour of tangerine, which indicated the sign was property of the North East region in about 1948.

Kate Maughan-Brown, from the museum, said: “When it was rubbed back, the team realised that the spacing was uneven and had been changed at some point so they have restored it to its original state – mistakes and all.”
