Proposal to demolish Queen Street bridge backed by tourism and transport chiefs

BUS and tourism chiefs have welcomed proposals to build York’s first bus interchange near the city railway station.

The Press reported yesterday that City of York Council officers have begun investigating the feasibility of demolishing Queen Street bridge, between the station and Micklegate Bar, and creating an interchange on the land below.

The authority’s transport boss, Coun Dave Merrett , stressed the proposal was at a very early stage, and might form part of a major bid for capital funding from a devolved transport fund which the Government is proposing to set up.

A spokesman for First, York’s biggest bus operator, said that although the idea was at an early stage, the firm would be a big supporter of any such plans to create a modern bus interchange.

“The creation of a transport ‘suberhub’ that links trains, buses and other forms of transport is an exciting prospect and one that would benefit York and the surrounding areas,” he said.

“Extensive research shows that visitors to any city want simple and easy accessible transport options when they arrive.

“To have a modern bus interchange just yards from their arriving train would be a massive attraction and would potentially attract many more visitors to the historic city and the wider Yorkshire area.”

Keith Wood, acting chairman of the tourism organisation Visit York, said York’s accessibility, with its excellent road and rail links, was a key factor in encouraging visits to the city from all across the UK.

“We welcome any initiatives that propose improvements to public transport, as we actively encourage visitors to take advantage of the city’s accessible location,” he said.

Does 'other' mean cars or just cycles?

I recall that there were once plans afoot to create a through daytime cycle route under the bridge, from Holgate Road via the railway offices internal road to the War Memorial on Station Rise.
Could the City end of this still be achieved even with the bridge removed? It would be a really useful link with the recently build cycle route from Holgate Road, via the station's long stay car park

This has been on cards for ages as part of York Central idea and is a great idea but where will the money come from as its hugely expensive and there is no money
possibly our reserves could have een used if we had not already spent £40 million plus of them on a new Council HQ

Not a well used road anyway, there's only one car on it in broad daylight so hardly going to cause any traffic holdups if it is demolished.......hmm

Its rather strange how there was no interest in this until the council were very nearly moved into their new over expensive offices nearby.

It's almost as if they are wanting a bus station very close so they don't have to walk very far to get an overpriced poor service home!

What does '“The creation of a transport ‘suberhub’ that links trains, buses and other forms of transport' mean excatly?

Which forms?
Please list them and the proposed facilities planned if we the council tax or income tax payer are paying for improved facilities for your bus companies benefit as well as the public's.

That'll be a no go area during the early hours of the morning. Unless your up to no good of course.

Would it not be a better idea to demolish the old bridge and build a new, wider flyover road with a bus station underneath. Slightly more elevated than it currently is so a bus station could be built under the road. Thus not interfering with the flow of traffic. A cycle route could also be created under the road as suggested above.Would it not be a better idea to demolish the old bridge and build a new, wider flyover road with a bus station underneith.

What about the Old York Station or have people forgot about the historic site.

No not forgotten, just tarmaced over or built on. There is very little left of the Old York Station, Just a few feet of Platform and Canopy.

The old York station is fast becoming council offices at the moment. Whether the council would like it or not, but cars could be directed to use the road at the top of station road past the offices to go under the city walls where the old train lines used to be, thus freeing up the whole space outside the station for public transport and taxi's.

The old York Stone could be reused in the new bus station.

The bridge is encassed in concrete... as a recent event in London would show (I think it was the M4 that had to be closed), concrete spalls and falls off, then the metal underneath starts to corrode, expanding as it does so and forcing more concrete to fall off until it eventually fails (this is why several concrete lamp posts are getting replaced at the moment).... that bridge serves no purpose and eventually it'll fail.
