New York bus pass just ticket for passengers

A NEW ticket which can be used on any bus in York for a week has been launched.

The All York Week tickets are being introduced by City of York Council in collaboration with bus operators, one of three new types of ticket available from drivers aboard any bus in the city.

The ticket costs £20, including a wallet to keep it in, and allows passengers to travel anywhere in York on all services for seven consecutive days, removing the need to buy multiple tickets from different firms.

Coun Dave Merrett said it was part of wider efforts to cut congestion in the city by encouraging more residents to use public transport, as they will not have to wait for a particular service to arrive on routes served by different bus operators.

All York Day tickets, costing £4.50 for adults, and £10 All York Family tickets, which can be used by two adults and up to three children on a single day, have already been introduced.

this sounds a bit too sensible for york.if merrett thinks that it s going to cut congestion he d better think again.as soon as the bad weather comes people who have a choice wont be waiting for a bus.if you want to really ease congestion mr merrett, though i m not convinced that you really do,then get rid of half the useless unneeded traffic lights, make sure bus stops don t block roads and ban cycles from york.

Good that tickets can be used on all services now. The thing about de-regulisation is many companies and different ticketing, like trains and buses. Still wont stop congestion though as the pricing is too high, profiteering for you.

Totally agree First 4 Week in York is currently £53 whereas this ticket would be £80 for the same period.

I bet the operators (First and Transdev) set the ticket price.

A First Month ticket in Leeds is only £63 for unlimited travel through out West Yorkshire!!

It's not actually valid on all services though is it? The no.10 route between Poppleton and Stamford Bridge is currently shared by First and Transdev, but the AllYork ticket isn't valid on the whole of this route.....not much use then for those of us using that route who still have to buy two singles (at £3 each) for a night out in the city centre.

Yet another example of having to pay through the nose for convenience. These tickets should cost no more than the highest fare for all companies involved, which would be the equivalent of £3.70 a day for a FirstDay ticket. Why on earth do these AllYork tickets cost £4.50?

£20 for the All York weekly ticket doesnt compare too well with the £16 it costs for a First weekly ticket (or the £13.25 pw that First's four-weekly ticket works out at).

Good idea, but the excessive price differential means it isn't worth my while switching, so I'll carry on in the same old way when First services don't turn up; waving the other operators past and waiting for the one I've already paid for.

Indeed, there needs to be a standard averaged fare for each bus company + 10 or 20p to cover the admin involved with making sure each company gets their cut. Given that First York vastly overcharge for their fares, this shouldn't ever exceed the £3.70 they charge. Until then, I can't see the uptake on these new tickets being significant.

No buses for ages and then 2 or 3 at once really encourages bus us, plus only 1 an hour on an evening (if your lucky) also helps, not to mention the exorbitant fares really does encourage people out of their cars.

That's too expensive. In Oslo, I pay the quiv. of 20 quid for 7 days BUT they have trams; an underground; and the buses and trams run til midnight. What do we have? Buses that are ONCE AN HOUR past 8 pm and vanish not much longer after that. For the coverage and service (poor!) they shouldn't dare charge more than 2 quid a day and therefore £10 for the severely limited "unlimited" buses.

Ah! So that's why Sour Grapes was in the news with his 3 buses video.
He was politicking.

Previously a champion of public transport, now attempting to stir up bad feeling just prior to the roll out of new ticketing ideas and the bus station idea in order to rubbish the other party.

Petty and pointless.

its not valid in stamford bridge because the ticket is provided by city of york council, and stamford bridge doesnt come under city of york council.....

i would imagine because First or Transdev wont allow you to travel free ( why should they ) so the council will probably have to give First and Transdev part of the cost of the ticket, and keep some for themselves

always makes me laugh this one, £3.70 for a day ticket, you can use that ticket as many times as you want in a 24 hour period, so you can go to work with it, come home from work, go back to town for a meal or drinl or cinema, and go back home again all for £3.70 BARGAIN, or get a weekly for £16, used to cost me £56 a week to run my car....£16 BARGAIN....how much do people think it costs to run 100 odd buses 20 hours a day 350 days a year?

It is NOT a bargain if there are NO buses when you need them. If you already run a car for other reasons than for what you use the bus it is a lot CHEAPER to use your car than the bus.

Look at the bigger picture. Are the FirstDay tickets cheap at £3.70, or are the standard day returns (at least from my area) too expensive at £3.50?

Magicman! says...

The returns are overpriced, and in so doing almost forces people into buying the day ticket instead.

Originally the All York ticket was going to be £5.... but £4.50 is still a bit steep for what it is. £4 would be more easy to swallow, in conjunction with some sort of bus service after the sun has set!
