MORE THAN 50 years ago, Angela Jackson was only 16 and working in Bettys in York when a passer-by caught her eye.

A first date in Scarborough soon followed for Angela and Barry Jackson before a wedding two years later.

The newlyweds made a return trip to Scarborough for a week’s honeymoon, which cost them £5.

The Huntington couple, both now 68, who regularly met up at SS Empire, now home to the Grand Opera House, are today celebrating their golden wedding.

Mrs Jackson said: “We’ve always been good friends and we split everything down the middle. In those days, you didn’t have that many people at weddings so the girls from Bettys stood outside the register office and cheered us on.”

They have three children – Steven, 49, Andrew, 47 and Lisa, 44 – seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

They are planning a celebration meal with family and friends.

She said: “This time I said we are having a proper cake because I didn’t get to have one at my wedding as we didn’t have much money. We’ve had a very good life together and our children and grandchildren are the best things that have ever happened to us.”

Mr Jackson, who was a tradesman all his life, and Mrs Jackson, who worked at Rowntrees for 30 years, are both now retired.

They enjoy travelling, often visiting family in Australia, stopping at various countries on the way.
