St Martin-le-Grand Church clock to be hoisted back into place

Restored clock to be hoisted back into place Restored clock to be hoisted back into place

PART of York’s busiest shopping street will be closed for three hours next week to allow one of the city’s most famous clocks to be hoisted back into place.

The timepiece on St Martin-le-Grand Church, in Coney Street was removed last November for an overhaul, but its restoration – which will allow it to chime the quarter-hour for the first time since the Second World War – has been plagued by delays.

The work to put it back in position will mean Coney Street will be closed to traffic between New Street and St Helen’s Square from 6am to 9am on Sunday.

Shame it has to be 6am to 9am... had it been, for example, from midnight to 3am I could have gone along and watched!
