Leeds Festival and Ebor meeting spark A64 warning

MOTORISTS heading to York Racecourse’s Ebor meeting and the Leeds Festival next week are being urged to plan their journeys well in advance.

Drivers are being warned they will not be able to travel on the A64 eastbound from Leeds to York next Thursday and will have to find an alternative route.

The Highways Agency said the A64 between York and Leeds and the A1M are likely to be even busier than normal when the music festival and major race meeting are staged over the Bank Holiday weekend.

“All routes to the festival start from the A1(M) and there is no access to the Leeds Festival from any other route,” said a spokesman. “The route to the festival will be clearly signposted from the A1, M1, M62 and A1(M).

“Next Thursday, festival traffic will use both lanes of the one-way system on the A64 from the A1 and will turn right into the festival car parks, opposite the Dogs Trust. To allow for this, the A64 is being closed to all eastbound traffic from the Fox and Grapes until and 5am on Friday.”

Did no one at planning level think to stage these two big events in the same week would cause traffic chaos?

......please don't let them be involved in a brewery!!....because they couldn't organise that one I know.

Even more local is that we have the Paralympic Lantern arriving at York Station alonside the racegoers and then an open top bus driving around in the midst of race traffic

And the masses attending the Mystery Plays to add to it!

And not forgetting the week enders going to the coast. Hopgrove is a no no

Surely better advice would to undertake your journey earlier rather than plan your journey earlier?

Went past all the muppets sat on the A64 last weekend and it was queued all the way past Grimston Bar. People seem to rely too much on Sat Navs nowadays when all it takes is to get a map out and find an alternative route or set off a bit earlier.

Well if the A1237 and Hopgrove junction had been done properly, nearby roads going to the junction would have variable message signs fitted that would state "Heavy Congestion on A64 East - For East Coast Use A166 (Driffield) and B1249", and then people wouldn't need sat nav's.

Alternatively, people could use the train....
... Except for the Leeds Festival of course, as it's literally in the middle of nowhere!

There IS a bus service from Leeds station to the site, however it, like everything else to do with the event, is completely overpriced and can't cope with demand at peak time so a lot of people choose to drive and sit in a jam for 3 hours, rather than queue in a car park for 3 hours waiting for a bus

"Drivers warned not to travel on A64 and A1M busier than normal" So basically the only routes into and out of Leeds from are gonna be blocked. Just what a commuter wants on their way to and from work.
