A DRAMATIC helicopter training exercise is taking place over York Minster today, as RAF pilots and rescue crew hone their life-saving skills.

The team, in a Sea King helicopter from RAF Leconfield, ‘rescued’ a dummy casualty from the central tower of the Minster at about 2.30pm, prompting several calls to alert The Press to the incident.

Pam Simpson, marketing officer with the Minster, said: “It’s a general training exercise.

“It’s part of a routine and we did it a few years ago, and have done the same for the fire service. The Minster is still open to visitors, but no tower trips will be held while the exercise is taking place.”
