POST Offices in York have had a run on Team GB commemorative stamps in the wake of the London Olympics.
Stamps have been issued by Royal Mail for all 29 gold medal winners from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with the stamps of cyclist Bradley Wiggins, Olympic rowers Helen Glover and Heather Stanning making the record books as the first-ever stamps ssued by the Royal Mail to be produced within 24 hours.
In York, stamps featuring Heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis and Bradley Wiggins have proved the most popular.
The post offices in Colliergate, Mickelgate, and the central post office in Lendal, have all sold out of stamps featuring Jessica Ennis and Bradley Wiggins, while the branch in Walmgate has had none of the new stamps delivered.
Dermot Heslop, from the British Judo Association, who lives in York, bought stamps featuring gold-medal winner Mo Farah at Lendal and put the stamp shortage down to the growing “Olympic spirit” after Britain won an unprecedented 29 gold medals.
Mr Heslop, who worked at the Olympic Games for two weeks and was collecting souvenirs of the event, said: “The atmosphere was unbelievable and was on a scale no one had quite expected.”
Lendal has had the largest stock and daily deliveries, and is sending stamps to other post offices in the area to help accommodate for the shortage.
The stamps cost £3.60 for six first-class stamps and can be bought from royalmail.com/bethefirst/stamps A spokesperson for the Royal Mail said the stamps have been very popular. He said: “The stamps are available on next-day delivery in over 500 branches, but they are not available in all 11,800 branches.”
