IF YOU can raise a winning smile this month then your help is needed with a project to brighten up the Cancer Care Centre (CCC) at York Hospital .

York student Reman Sadani, 16, wants 100 owners of the city’s biggest and brightest grins to have their picture taken for a film which will be displayed on a rotating LCD screen in the cancer unit, hopefully bringing a ray of hope to patients at a difficult time.

She said: “I have always been fascinated by the human ability to overcome difficulties. I believe that it is such an exciting opportunity for me to take part in this journey to defeat what seems like the impossible and to let a smile of hope take over sadness and pain.

“A smile can have a great positive effect over people.”

Reman, who moved to York from Iraq two years ago with her mother, is studying photography at York College and said she was inspired to create the Give York a Smile project by a similar scheme she saw in Saudi Arabia.

As part of the Give York A Smile project, the hospital is encouraging donations to be made to the CCC to create a new garden and courtyard area which can be used by anyone affected by cancer.

Jane Archer, manager of the Cancer Care Centre, said: “We are so grateful to Reman for choosing to support the CCC and our garden project.

“The Give York A Smile project has a heart-warming message and any money raised will help us to create this vital garden space as soon as possible.

“The new garden will be a beautiful and flexible area that we hope will be enjoyed by all who visit it. Many thanks to everyone who assists Reman with her project.”

Reman is now looking for people to attend a drop-in photography sessions in the CCC, between 10am and 11am every Monday and Friday throughout August.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the project is asked to visit justgiving.com/GiveYorkasmile or phone 01904 721737 for more information.
