York set for Yorkshire Day celebrations

Yorkshire Day tomorrow will celebrate all things which has made the county great Yorkshire Day tomorrow will celebrate all things which has made the county great

YORK will play its part in the annual Yorkshire Day celebrations tomorrow, writes Katharine Wootton.

Now in its 37th year, the 2012 Yorkshire Day will revel in the very best of our county – from flat caps to Yorkshire puds in events across the region.

In York, the Yorkshire Ridings Society will perform the traditional Yorkshire Day rite, with readings of the Declarations Of Integrity in modern and old dialect around the city walls – in tribute to the 1,137 years since the first reference to the county and its Ridings was made.

Visitors will also be able to sample the very best of Yorkshire produce in a local trader’s market at Newgate Market.

Great Yorkshire food and drink is to be celebrated at York’s Chocolate Story where visitors can taste a special range of chocolates with Yorkshire flavours including Wensleydale cheese and apple and white chocolate with rhubarb.

Pie company Poole’s are holding a Yorkshire Day mission to find the perfect pie. This will then compete with the North West’s best entry, re-igniting the long-held Yorkshire v Lancashire feud through pastry.

Hinchcliffe’s Farm Shop is also busy making a giant Pork Minster pie to be unveiled on the Minster steps at 2.30pm.

Coun James Alexander, City of York Council leader, said: “It’s fantastic to see city traders and businessmen and women still showing their enthusiasm and loyalty to the region and celebrating all that is great about Yorkshire”.

Meanwhile, at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway a special lunchtime Pullman service will depart from Grosmont at 1.30pm in celebration of great Yorkshire transport.

While at the Yorkshire Air Museum, Yorkshire’s own Sir George Cayley, inventor of the aeroplane, will feature in their Pioneers Of Aviation Exhibition.

  • The Yorkshire Ridings Society will read the Yorkshire Declaration Of Integrity at 10.45am at Walmgate Bar, 11,35am at Micklegate Bar, 12.20pm at Bootham Bar, 12.35pm at Monk Bar and 1pm in Parliament Street.

The Yorkshire Rose stands on one point. If we are to celebrate Yorkshire Day let us start of with the correct emblem.
