£17k fraud revealed by anonymous tip

A WOMAN has admitted a £17,000 benefit fraud after it was exposed by an anonymous tip-off.

Sinead Doherty, 31, of Dodsworth Avenue, York, pleaded guilty to the fraud before the city’s magistrates on Thursday, after failing to inform the Department for Work and Pensions and City of York Council that she had regular employment.

The council said Doherty was overpaid £17,318.35 between 2003 and 2008.

She was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, with a 12-month supervision order and 180 hours unpaid community service.
