THIS couple from York are celebrating their golden wedding this weekend with a family celebration.

Michael Rawcliffe , 72, and his wife Evelyn, 70, met when Michael popped into an Acomb butchers for a pork pie. Evelyn had just started work at the shop.

She said: “He came into William Wright’s Pork Butchers where I was a counter assistant. I liked him when he came in, which he did a couple of times and we became friends. We started going out at the Easter just before my 16th birthday.”

The couple married at New Lendal Congregational Church, in Burton Stone Lane, 50 years ago today.

Mr Rawcliffe became an apprentice at the former carriageworks in Holgate , eventually going on to start his own cabinet-making business. His wife moved from her job at Wright’s to the laundry at Clifton Hospital before leaving for the birth of their first child, Anthony, in 1967. Daughter Jane followed in 1969.

Tomorrow the couple will be joined by their family, including four grandchildren, for a celebration dinner at the Monkbar Hotel.

Asked for the secret to a long marriage, Evelyn said: “You have to look after each other. You have to give and take too.

“We are just happy.”
