THE new man in charge of developing York’s new Local Plan as well as overseeing the city’s transport and waste disposal has been announced as Darren Richardson, currently in charge of environmental services at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Mr Richardson will succeed Bill Woolley, who retired earlier this year, as director of city and environmental services and is expected to join City of York Council in November.

He is a qualified chartered builder and a chartered highways and transportation engineer and currently a member of the South Yorkshire Strategic Leadership Group, the South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority and the Yorkshire and Humber Flood and Regional Coastal Committee.

Kersten England, chief executive of York council, said: “I’m incredibly pleased to welcome Darren to the City of York Council’s city and environmental services directorate team.

"I look forward to him sharing his expertise and experience with us, challenging the status quo, pushing for new solutions to old and new problems and being a key strategic player in the development and delivery of the city’s local plan.”

Council leader James Alexander said: “This appointment completes our management team, putting us in the best position to meet the challenges we face as a city head-on while establishing the plans which will shape our city’s future.”
