Local sporting heroes nominated for Community Pride award

THREE sporting heroes have been nominated for a Community Pride award for their outstanding contribution to amateur sport.

Athlete Scott Lincoln, Rugby Union referee Bob Scott and cricket devotee Albert Pattison have both been put forward in the sporting hero category for their devotion to sport.

Shot-put star Mr Lincoln, 19, is known for his incredible hard work as a full-time builder while training five times a week.

His dedication has seen him take the top spot in the UK under 20 rankings and 13th for the same age group in Europe. Paul Wilson, his coach at Cith of York Athletics Club, said in nomination: “Scott is a excellent role model and a lot of the athletes who train with me and other athletes at the athletics club look up to him.

“Recently he has also been doing a lot of voluntary work going into schools and pre-schools doing demonstrations and giving talks on his event and his experience.

“Scott has an excellent future ahead and narrowly missed out on being selected for this year’s World Junior Championships. His next target is next year’s European under 23 championships.”

Another nominee is legendary rugby referee, Mr Scott of Nunthorpe Avenue. Putting forward Mr Scott, Murray Halliday said he nominated him because of his 40 years of involvement in Rugby Union refereeing, initially as a referee and touch judge and latterly on the administration side of refereeing.

“He has for the past few years been Secretary of North Yorkshire and Cleveland Referees’ Society and serves on Yorkshire Federation Committee.”

Meanwhile, Mr Pattison, the York Senior Cricket League managing secretary, has been nominated for his lifelong dedication to cricket in York and the region.

Nominating him, Colin Graves said: “Albert Pattison has been a legend in his own right within recreational cricket in Yorkshire. His service to the York Senior League is a fantastic and outstanding contribution for his secretarial services alone.

“His meticulous attention to detail will never be repeated by anyone and we owe him a debt of gratitude for his commitment to the York Cricket Board.”

The Community Pride Awards, which will have a York 800 theme this year, are run in partnership with City of York Council and sponsored by Benenden Healthcare.
