Exhibitors fear huge losses after Great Yorkshire Show called off

EXHIBITORS fear the cancellation of the Great Yorkshire Show could leave them thousands of pounds out of pocket.

The Harrogate event was called off for the first time in 11 years yesterday because of the bad weather, with organisers saying ticket-holders will be refunded.

But exhibitors say they will lose money because of the show being cancelled, a decision described by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS), which organises it, as "heartbreaking".

Drew Lambert, who is among those who were due to have an exhibition at the show, said he could lose "just shy of about £20,000".

Sheep farmer Steve Richardson said the conditions were "dreadful" but he believed calling off the event after the first day was a "poor halfway house" and it should either have been cancelled last week or allowed to go ahead.

Show director Bill Cowling said it was the first time in 154 years that weather had forced the cancellation of the event. Advance ticket-holders will either get refunds or allowed to use their tickets next year, while entry fees for livestock exhibitors and events will also be refunded. YAS said it would also contact trade stand-holders and sponsors.

Visited yesterday. Went on the train - absolutely no problem. There were extra carriages, and sadly, the train both there and back was less than 1/2 full. Walked from Hornbeam Park to the showground, didn't use the provided shuttle buses at Harrogate, and we passed cars that were being pushed ONTO the car parks at 7:45 in the morning. We had a very good day, and I am deeply sorry for the traders and exhibitors who have had a bad time.

a group of friends and I were going down tomorrow and I'm gutted; we look forward to the show every year....

Don't see what the issue is really, it's not underwater and they don't shut farms if it rains a bit do they?

And exactly which farm is it that has to accomodate thousands of visitors?

Whilst I haven't been there, wouldn't it have been prudent after seeing other events struggle with car parking to ban cars from on site from the start?

there is enough p&r and trains to allow folk to get there, people on foot would not have caused this problem to this extent.

I'm sure cancelling the event was the last thing in the world event planners wanted to do. It wouldn't have been done without thought, so second guessing them from our armchairs is not productive. Sorry I won't get to go, as I've been planning since I missed last years. Suppose I'll have to fly back next summer, and hope for some sunny weather.

No it wasn't but if you look at the pictures, all of the problems have been caused by cars or vans.

they have known for weeks that this weather was coming, however failed to put propper durable surfaces in to get the traders in on the days leading up to the show and keeping cars out once the show opened.

once they had let cars in on day one there was always going to be an issue

Once a few vehicles got stuck - the Tractors and caterpillars moved in to tow, and what surface there was was ground up
and pummelled.
It's not just the visitors parking on site that was the concern; could have said no parking at the grounds and Harrogate would have been 100% grid locked with people driving around seeking spaces.
Unfortunately not everyone can use public transport.

Whilst exhibitors/traders will have lost out, as with all business, got to identify the risk, if it had paid off they would have made money, unfortunately it swung the other way this time.

I’ve got loads of work to do outside but cannot because of the weather, Can I get compensation due to lost earnings, I think not.
It’s an outside event, and from time to time like other events, the weather causes problems. Harsh words but accurate, if you don’t want to gamble with the weather, trade from a shop. No sympathy from me at all.
Compensation for the weather , makes my blood boil.
