CAR crime has risen by more than 60 per cent in the north of York in the past year.

Vehicle break-ins across the area, which had fallen, have now started to increase again with everything from laptops and golf clubs to clothing, glasses and loose change being stolen.

Since the start of April, thefts from vehicles have risen by 62 per cent year-on-year in the north of the city, with a 24 per increase in the city-centre and eastern area. Catalytic converters are continuing to be a prime target for thieves due to soaring metal prices.

Sergeant Andy Haigh, of York Safer Neighbourhood Command, said criminals who had previously concentrated on stealing satnav systems and car radios were now taking “anything they can get their hands on”, including food, driving licences and sunglasses left on view.

The worst-hit areas of the city include Clifton and Heworth.

Police have called on the public to pass on any relevant information. They also asked anybody who had been offered satnavs, laptops, golf clubs and other valuable items for sale at “suspiciously low prices” to get in touch, and also to get catalytic converters security marked for free at selected York garages.

Sgt Haigh said: “It is important that people use the free catalytic converter marking scheme provided at selected garages around York as this will deter thieves.

“We are putting extra resources in place and we have designated policing teams who will be cracking down on this. We are leaving no stone unturned.”

Sgt Haigh said the crackdown was intended to be preventative as well as proactive and residents could play their part by blowing the whistle on suspected thieves.
